TBI Adapter kit and info

UPDATE, March 14th 2003. A limited run of these adapters has just been received. I am not sure when additional pieces will be available again, so if you are thinking TBI, now is the time to get one.

I recently installed a throttle body fuel injection kit from Howell Fuel Injection. The kit I used is a variation of the early Jeep setup with a chip programmed for the Cruiser. Here are some pics of the pieces as I installed them. I am still working on some areas, specifically the mating to a stock air cleaner assembly, and a second generation adapter that will incorporate the cable mounting area.

To make this easier on me, and hopefully to improve loading speed these are thumbnails of the larger pics. Click on them and get a better look. They are not in any particular order, and I have added a description (hover mouse over them before clicking) to the thumbnails so you'll know what your looking at. More pics are coming soon.

The 3/4" billet adapter, 1st generation, installed on manifold.Overhead view, shows the bores and the the mounting holes. The fuel pump relay (larger item) and the fuses, mounted on the firewall near the opening for the harness to the ECM.Good shot of the cable and linkage, the bracket that holds the cable is bolted to the early "F" intake. Future versions will incorporate this into the adapter. The coolant temp sensor installed in the thermostat housing, replacing the unused switch thingies.

The TBI Adapter kit is designed to allow a GM throttle body to be mounted on the intake manifold of a Land Cruiser. Included in this kit is a .75" billet adapter, cnc milled from 6061 aluminum, with the bores aligned and radiused to the intake manifold. The mounting hardware and a TBI intake gasket are included. A complete parts list is further down the page. No items other than those marked as "included" are available from me, and only as a kit at this time.
The installation is very straight forward and the only tool that may not already be in your box is an 8 mm allen wrench, or the equivalent socket needed to install the four adapter to intake bolts. After removing the carb, and mounting studs from manifold, clean all surfaces including the threaded holes the stud came out of. I recommend using a carb cleaner and spray the mounting holes good and dry with compressed air. Place the stock heat shield/spacer into position first, followed by the adapter. Orient the adapter per the picture above. Using the four cap screws provided, put a drop or two of medium strength Locktite on them, and bolt the adapter into place. Do not use "RED" Locktite or over tighten these bolts. Next is the gasket and throttle body, which is held in place with three bolts, locking and flat SAE washers. To fit the air cleaner I used the center hold down bolt had to be lengthened. I cut it below the threads and added a 1" piece of bolt shank, welding it back together.
I matched the heat shield/spacer to the opening in the adapter using a 1" sanding drum in my drill press after cutting the center out with a sawzall. I don't know if there is any thing to be gained from this but it looks as though it improve the path the fuel/air mixture takes. I did this prior to installation.
