SM420 Adapter Plate

Here are pics of the SM420 adapter plate kits parts I have for sale. If you have any questions or are interested in purchasing either item you can reach me here.  I have received several e-mails with questions on the installation and the parts needed to do this swap. I will condensing them into a FAQ of sort sometime in the future. If you have come across this page and have info you would like to add, please e-mail it to me and I will give you credit if used.

First the disclaimers:

This is NOT an Extreme Bends clone. Don't call them bitchin*.

Kits are NO longer available. A limited run of the adapter plates were produced mid March and will be sold as Adapters only. Same quality and identical to the earlier versions.  The price has gone up unfortunately to $125

Indexing rings are also available for $25

bulletI am not affiliated with anyone else making, selling or installing plate style adapters, at least that I know of.
bulletI am not in the business of making and selling parts (I have a real job), but in an effort to get what I want at an affordable price I have developed a source for these high quality products. As a result I can make them available at a reasonable cost to fellow enthusiasts.
bulletThere is a great set of install procedures and a parts list for this type of plate adapter on Extreme Bends web site. I didn't write it or contribute in any way, but found it to the best write up for this swap.
bulletCharlie Glabe, aka Pinhead has also documented some important info when he did his conversion. He also has a tcase linkage kit I believe he is selling at a reasonable cost. Here's a link.

Front and back views of plate adapter

These are some of the items included in the kit. Missing are the Toyota parts and the gasket set which appear in pictures below.

Above is the Sm420 Gasket Set from NAPA,   PN# TS27520X. The gasket on the left is the one that goes between the tranny and the adapter plate. The rest are a bonus, to seal up your tranny before install.

To the left are the items that come from Toyota. I have elected to use OEM parts in this kit and from top to bottom they are: The washer/spacer that goes on the output shaft of the tranny between the 2 bearings. It shims the input gear to the correct position. Next is the rear tcase oils seal, and then a tcase gasket.

Indexing Ring installed on SM420

The indexing rings are needed to align the tranny to the 3spd bellhousing when adapting to an F or 2F engine. The 3spd Toyota tranny's input bearing retainer was used to align the stock setup, and the SM420 is smaller. These are not needed if you have converted to GM power. The rings are machined for a tight fit and using some boiling water you can expand them and slip into place. Optionally you can tig weld them to the retainer.

The plate adapters are CNC milled from 6061 aluminum by a professional machinist to exacting tolerances using state of the art equipment. All holes are relieved after boring, the transmission mounting holes are recessed and a socket will fit over the 3/8" bolts allowing you to secure the plate. The transfer case mounting holes are tapped for 7/16" coarse bolts. When using 3spd output flanges and driveshaft yokes "NO" grinding on tranny is required if you turn the flanges/yokes down to 3.80" outside diameter. This will leave plenty of surface for the bolts and clear the tranny.

If you are running an different engine than the stock F or 2F, expect to make mods if you use a rear crossmember to support the tcase and back of the motor. This plate rotates the tcase some and as a result the Advance Adapter type of crossmember must be modified to work. No mods of this type are need with stock setup.

Also plan to have your driveshafts modified. The difference in overall length of your current tranny plus the .75" of the adapter will give you an idea of the difference in lengths. After the install measure for yourself and make your own decision. Shackle reversals require more travel so the compression doesn't break your tcase, and the droop split your front slip joint.

These are no longer available, but I left the info here as a reference.

The Adapter Plates sell for $125 each, the Indexing Rings $25 each.  The Toyota parts kit including the seal, tcase gasket and washer/spacer is $20. The N307LOE bearings are $44. The Grade 5 mounting hardware is $8. The SM420 gasket kits $10. Totally $207 for all of the items. Shipping from 46220 is not included. PayPal or Money Orders are accepted forms of payment. Immediate shipping upon receipt of payment.

* Many have asked what this statement is about. Well in a nutshell there was some discussion on the Pirates BBS and it was suggested that people who had bought plates elsewhere were calling them complaining about the grinding on the tranny.  I decided to make sure it was understood this plate wasn't a clone, and that if you have concerns, don't call them.
