Master Brazilian Portuguese in idyllic Bahia

This page was not solicited, and is not paid for, by Dialogo

Diálogo offers Portuguese classes for all levels of learners. And historic Salvador offers an exceptional cultural backdrop for anyone wanting to learn Brazilian Portuguese. Diálogo is located in the fashionable Barra district, near the famed lighthouse ('farol'). Diálogo is not far from the cobblestone streets and pastel stucco facades of Pelourinho, a United Nations World Heritage Site. The city of Salvador was the first economic, political and cultural epicenter of Brazil. Its deep water port and tropical climate were ideally suited for the production and shipment of sugar cane. Europe, the world's great consumer society in the early 1500s, experienced an explosive increase in demand for cane sugar following the introduction of coffee from Arabia, tea from the Orient and cocoa from the New World. The African slave trade largely resulted from this demand. Brazilian culture, with its quintessentially African rhythms, African inspired fashions and 'Baiana' laced cuisine, is particularly well represented in the barrios of Salvador, Bahia.

Diálogo also offers Samba-dance and Afro-Brazilian cooking classes. Samba is the choreography of 'Brazilian soul'. And Salvador is renown for it's Afro-Brazilian cuisine including acarajé, moquecas and caruru. Take some time to explore my Brazilian Recipes gallery elsewhere at this site.

Ask Diálogo about the possibility of placing you with a host family to enrich your learning experience. Host family relationships provide personal support while offering unparalleled exposure to the everyday use of Brazilian Portuguese.

globeThe Diálogo cultural program makes it possible for students to participate in cultural excursions in and around the city of Salvador and, occaisionally, in the adjacent Bay and to nearby islands. The Didá music school, described in the Didá sub-gallery within the Social Programs of Brasil gallery at this site, is listed in Diálogo handouts. The Grupo Acupe capoeira program, described in it's own gallery at this site, is not affiliated with Diálogo but should be considered. Acupe has a U.S. chapter in Indiana. Read about Didá and Grupo Acupe at this site.

Study Portuguese in Southern Brazil

Study Portuguese in Santa Cruz do Sul, a small city founded by German immigrants in the 1800s, in idyllic southern Brazil where cooler winter (summer months in the U.S.) temperatures and a more relaxed atomosphere will set you at ease. This "Euro-Brazilian" community is about a thousand kilometers south of Săo Paulo and roughly 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Porto Alegre, Brazil's largest southern city. There are approximately 80,000 inhabitants in Santa Cruz, and about 100,000 in the area. The school is the S&K Brazilian Language and Culture Program, which emphasizes language acquisition through communication rather than grammar. The informative S&K Web page at http://www.sk.com.br/sk-psl.html includes a hyperlink to another page providing an excellent map and introduction to Santa Cruz.

Please be sure to tell S&K where you heard about them!
