Accommodations in Bahia, Brazil

and special notes on travel (and other) expenses

veranda view I am often asked about expenses related to visiting Salvador, Bahia (or elsewhere in), Brazil by potential volunteers. The most frequent inquiries relate to accommodations and how much it will cost. Sometimes I am asked about sponsorships, living expenses, or the possibility of securing a part-time job to help fund a visit. I don't have personal resources for sponsorships, and I have no connection with, or access to, individuals or organizations that do. I also have no time or resources to research living expenses or find anyone a job and, besides, you can't legally work in Brazil without a work visa. Usually volunteers are coming on student or tourist visas. I have stumbled onto some information, and a few websites that may help. I happily share that information with you here below but, beyond that, you're on your own. A website with info on accommodations in Salvador, Bahia ...

interior viewIn April, 2004 I stumbled onto a website at http://www.bahia-online.net/dan.htm listing rooms for rent. Most were too expensive for student-volunteers and low-budget travelers, but at that time I saw at least one listing for rooms in the popular Barra district for $30-40 U.S. per night. The first two photos on this page were posted with that listing - verify their association with the listing though, through the contact listed at the bahia-online website.

You can always search for other information at http://www.google.com!

Accommodations info from visitors to this site ...

posada laranjeira A reader and potential volunteer, Sigurlin H. Luce, discovered pousada Ambar at Rua Alansa Celsa 485 in Salvador near the Barra Shopping mall. The URL for Ambar is http://www.ambarpousada.com.br/. To see the English text you need to click on the American flag.

Robert Abreu discovered a hostel associated with the Hostelling International/American Youth Hostels organization in the historic district of Pelourinho - it's called "BR Salvador, Laranjeiras" (photo on the right). The URL for this hostel is http://www.alaranj.com.br/. Be sure to click on "English" in the upper right corner of the screen if necessary. Robert says that - as of March 2004 - it costs about $9 or $10 U.S. per night posada mesonwith breakfast included, and involves sharing a room with 5 other people.

Antonína Rosa, a social worker from Israel, found a room at Pousada Meson (reference the photo on the left) across the street from the old Medical Faculty in Pelourinho. Check out the website at http://www2.uol.com.br/mochilabrasil/hotelpousadameson.shtml I believe I saw prices as low as $10 U.S. per night there, but I would expect that means sharing a room with other people - check the website and communicate with the pousada for more information. As always, unless otherwise clearly stated, I cannot personally vouch for any other individual, organization or facility. You've got to do your own homework on everything related to your travels. Good luck!
